The Parts That I Found Challenging...

Throughout these past 6 months, I found many of the dances difficult. This was due to the fact that my stamina had to be high. An example of this was during the Refugees piece. This dance was all about refugees arriving at a camp to find an unsafe and cramped place which they were not expecting. This piece required you to run a lot and to always be on stage with masses amount of energy and intention within your body. Therefore my stamina had to be up to par in order for me to be able to be able to a very high energy dance. During this piece, there were jumps, floor work, small motifs and also repeating sequences.

Another dance that I found challenging was the Basketball scene. This dance was about a game of basketball that becomes edgy with two rival teams playing against each other. In my opinion, this dance was more like an aerobics class due to the high intensity of energy as well as the fast pace choreography. This also required you to look alive and to keep going with lots of energy.

Improving...

Throughout the 6 months that were spent learning, developing, expanding and rehearsing, I was exploring my character in order to allow myself to perform correctly and to feel the movements better. I wanted to really explore my character in the deepest detail possible. By doing this I was able to feel the emotions of a young girl that is in a conflicted situation with no way of getting help or even escaping. I tried to imagine what it would be like to be in a life like this. Even though I cannot fully understand what it is like to be in a place where this is happening, I tried to think about how I would feel in a time where I felt lost, scared, helpless and also hurt. I then thought about how I would move if I was to be feeling these emotions all at once and how I would think or look.

I thought about how I would feel if I couldn't see my family any more....if I lost my favourite/most meaningful possession.....or if my life was to be a bomb site.

Life would be very different...

People that are experiencing this are in dire need of help as well as support so by portraying their lives correctly, I felt that I was raising awareness of how serious it is to be in conflict within a place such as Syria where people are trying to get help and be supported for something that they never started or ever thought that they would be in.

They cannot escape this horrible life without help.

Dance Session 2 and Connecting with the Audience...

Over the past few months before our show, we had a number of rehearsals that we worked extremely hard within. During these rehearsals, I worked on my performance quality as well as my technique and quality of movement. I did this by trying to get into my character in further depth and by also going through the movement slowly; step by step. This helped me a lot because it enabled me to correctly perform the movement and motifs to the best of my ability.

Another way that helped me to improve my performance quality was by trying to think about what it would be like to be in an area of conflict as well as being in the situation of having to flee from my home and to be separated from my family. This helped me in everything that I did or had to do. This was due to the fact that it allowed me to express my emotions through the dances in a clearer way. This also then allowed the audience to connect with the message of the different pieces and to feel what I was feeling as I was performing.

Connecting with the audience was a big part of rehearsing as well as developing my performance skills. This is due to the fact that when you connect to the audience, you convey a message and try to make them feel what you are feeling yourself when performing. This can be a hard thing to achieve whilst performing on a stage as you are so concentrated in either trying to get the movement correct or thinking about what you are doing and the way that you are doing it. By connecting with the audience, you can also convey a certain message in a specific way. Conveying a message will allow the audience to understand the theme of the show better and also the reason behind your chosen dance pieces.

Small Group Choreography Part 2

My small group performed our choreography to our teachers in order to get some feedback for how to improve and develop our movement in further detail. Our piece is still about an article entitled 'Maryam's Story'. This is about how a young girl that experiences a bombing in her village so her family has to flee from their home to a safer place. She has to leave all of her possessions behind such as her special childhood toy; her doll. After we had shown our teachers our dance piece we received the feedback of needing to reduced the amount of throwing with the doll as well as thinking more about the intention of every movement; what does each movement represent. We then went away and thought about the comments that we had been given. After this, we rehearsed our choreography until we felt that it covered all of the feedback given to us.
